CAP Supports Pathologists and Medical Laboratories

The College of American Pathologists (CAP) is the professional home for pathologists, providing the best education and resources, unparalleled connections and networking, and a loudspeaker for advocacy on behalf of the specialty. In 2023, our organization worked together with members to further the goals and meet the needs of not only the CAP, but of all pathologists, medical laboratories, and the patients we serve.

The simple truth is no one leads the CAP alone. The president—working with the CEO, Board of Governors, House of Delegates, and others—does their best to serve members and patients, while inviting pathologists at all stages of their careers to step forward with their ideas, experiences, and leadership. The CAP would be nothing without its members.

In 2023, the CAP listened to members and continued to provide practical solutions for their work while making necessary changes to take our organization and specialty into the future. One-of-a-kind experiences such as the CAP23 annual meeting, Pathologists Leadership Summit, and Pathology in the Islands, as well as leading education and resources like the MyCAP app, allowed members to learn, grow, seamlessly connect, and share ideas.

The organization, furthering its commitment to serving as the home for all pathologists, grew to over 19,000 members around the world last year. To ensure our growing membership upholds the values of physicians and the CAP, we also established the new Ethics and Professionalism Committee. Both this committee and the new membership milestone highlight the CAP’s commitment to collaboration and collegiality, working together to address the needs of members and bringing the power of shared purpose to our diverse member community. Be sure to see the Investing in Our Members section for more.

The CAP and its members made a significant impact on legislative, payment, and regulatory issues impacting the specialty in 2023 and beyond. Through the 2023 Hill Day and advocacy efforts throughout the year, the CAP successfully lobbied Congress to mitigate cuts to Medicare fees and encouraged action on the pathologist workforce shortage. Advocacy efforts aimed at addressing health care disparities also continued; members met with key leaders in Washington, DC, to review the CAP’s work to eliminate disparities in diagnostics and encourage more action. The Influencing Public Policy section covers these topics, state legislative wins, the Pathologists Quality Registry, and more.

Thanks to the expertise of our members, the CAP continues to provide the most rigorous and prestigious laboratory accreditation and proficiency testing programs in the world. In 2023, the CAP met the needs of medical laboratories with updated accreditation checklists, new ISO 15189 standards, 13 new proficiency testing programs, new cancer protocols, and much more. Supporting laboratories in more than 115 countries, the CAP seeks to improve quality, reduce risk, and ensure accurate test results for patients everywhere. Read more in the Leading Laboratory Quality section.

Thank you to all the pathologists who work every day on behalf of their patients’ health. And thanks to the members who joined or renewed their membership in the CAP and lent their time and expertise to the betterment of pathology in 2023. We look forward to working together with all pathologists in 2024 and well into the future.
